Try to sound more natural in casual conversation. by: @geben.le
💡 This week #TipTuesdays is from our friends at Geben Language Experience who run a language school from Brazil 🇧🇷
Tip: Sometimes speakers from Latin languages such as Portuguese, Spanish, Italian etc tend to use verbs in English that sound similar to verbs in their own languages. To sound more natural in casual conversation, you can replace a formal verb for a phrasal verb.
Some examples: – Instead of using ‘remove’, you can use ‘take off’: E.g.: I’m going to remove my jacket. / I’m going to take off my jacket.
– ‘Carry on’ can be a good alternative instead of ‘continue’: E.g.: Continue with what you’re saying, please. / Carry on with what you’re saying, please.
The same happens to ‘reduce’ and ‘cut down’: E.g.: I need to reduce my spendings next month. / I need to cut down on my spendings next month.
Whatever languages you are learning, try to find out different ways to say the same thing to broaden your vocabulary and improve your fluency.
